Flashing around a ROUND suntunnel?
Hey guys, my first post and I need your help.!
Had regular shingles installed last Sept and this Jan during a wind storm had about 2 packs blow off. Wanted to install a metal roof at the time but local merchants pushed the fiberglass shingles instead of metal. I wish I had stuck to my guns and went with metal.
Anyhow, the whole roof has to be done over and metal it will be.
My problem is that I installed 2 Velux Sun Tunnels, so how do I flash around them.?
My roof has less than 4/12 pitch.

Are those the skylights with the plastic bases and a clear plastic dome-shaped lense? If so, you would be better off to make a square curb out of wood and fab a metal cap for it that has a circular tap on the top of it for your plastic lense to mount to. You could then flash the wooden curb by traditional methods. There is no good way to seal to the original base to a metal roof such that the seal will last a long time. How large of a diameter do these skylights have?

Yes, these have the plastic base and clear plastic doom-shape lense. But it also hase a large metal flange that I could use to, as you sugest., to build a square curb and then flash by traditional methots.

I have attached the link to the web page for Velux so you can see for yoursel the product I have installed. I tried to attach a photo of my roof and the sun tunnel but I am using a tablet, not a computer and I can't seem to get it to work. The sun tunne I installed ie a 10 inch diameter one.
Thanks for you hlp.

Parsons,
Years ago I contacted a manufacturer of the plastic flanged sun tunnels for the preferred method of tying into a built up roof. The rep suggested I simply caulk the plastic stripping flange to the felts prior to graveling. Needless to say I was amused by his response.
To answer your question, I would suggest building a curb and elevating the sun tunnel off of the roof. A plastic flange doesn't belong anywhere on a metal roof!!
Good luck.

Colpaw,
Thanks for that. It seems that I will have to build a curb.
In the manufacturers web site there is a kit they supply to put on a tile roof, a flexable type flange that conforms with the profile of the tiles. .I wonder if that would be any good?

If you are going to go the extra mile and put on a metal roof you should certainly not cut corners on the flashing details. Building a curb is in your best interest.

Tunnel lite
As a person who has cut in and installed plenty of these for home owners, after not being able to talk out of, I have no comment except, does one of these kits really have a place on a metal roof application?

To the metal roof guy
You only got one shot at installing a
Metal roof correctly, any thing done wrong or half assed will haunt you for ever, can you post a design of said project or is it just a simple roof.
