snipbits The Root Of the Evil…

It could have been written yesterday, but it’s actually an article from Sheet Metal Worker Magazine June 19th 1925. I sat down to get a bit of reading in and I opened the magazine up and in my face was an article titled “The Root Of The Evil” More Read full article...

snipbits Don’t fear the machine!

Plasma, plasma, plasma…thank goodness for plasma! And it really is a good thing for the most part, but to be honest with you I would not know how to fire one of them fancy machines up. When I first seen these badboys, I feared my job was at risk. Great they may be, but they can not replace a good layout person!

I worked for a contractor that had one of them plasma machines, they constantly bragged of how one of them plasma units could do the work of many men /woman on the bench and feed metal to 20 installers in the field, and work around the clock and not charge overtime for Saturdays, and not call in sick and not ask for benefits, blah, blah, blah. But the person at the machine couldn’t layout a fitting to save their soul. The sad truth is that the company was probably still ahead of the game with the investment they made to go automated.

The honest truth is, if you’re doing any kind of work in big numbers and you want to stay competitive – you might want to enter the world of automation and go plasma - But do understand that a machine may break down or need maintenance,or the computer crashes, or the machine may be in the middle of a job and you’re called upon to throw together a quick square to round that might be a “stat replacement” for a job that needs to be wrapped up in the field today…or worse yet, they call it in and it has to be two inches off center! Can you get it done, or do you tell them they have to put off finishing the job until another day because the machine is busy at the moment and I don’t have the skill to get you what you need.

My point here is, don’t fear the machine, but more importantly don’t let your layout skill slip away while the machine takes over for a bit. Just as the companies might depend on the machines, I’d be willing to bet they depend on us as well to standby ready to take over the moment the machine decides to take a break.

If you happen to be the person at the machine that has no idea how these fittings might be laid out on the bench…then you have some catching up to do and we’ll help you get to that point. The next shop you go to, might not come with machine?

Posted by: Bud

snipbits How do they find us and where do we stand in the search engines?

I'm not kidding when I say this is some of the toughest work one could ever have to do (for a desk job, my friends). We already know that being a sheet metal worker is a job that requires much skill and toughness :) Been there done that and probably should have stayed there doing that:) However, I have no regrets. These past few years have been both great and frustrating and we continue to move forward, thanks to the industry. Our job is not over - and that's a good thing, right?
