| After 16 years in the computer industry, I decided to persue a career in the sheet-metal trade. I have been working in a commerical sheet metal shop for the past few months, and was just apprenticed yesterday. I am pretty excited about entering the trade. I am following my father's footsteps, and hope that I can contribute to some forums. |

Aramage,
Welcome. To the site, and to the trade.
Computer industry, eh? Wow, that's a departure.
The greatest contribution you can make at this moment is to learn.
What did you do with computers?
Programming, web design, service/repair?
If you were the type who poured over tech manuals, pour over the information that Bud has posted in the library. If you've signed up for the union apprenticeship, there will be a specific format that you'll follow, but it is a well-designed, and time-tested form. Just be patient, and teach yourself as much as your time, and energy will permit.
This is a career that is only limited by what you're willing to learn. As in computers, the more you know, the greater your opporunities.
Bud has developed an awesome library from texts dating back to earlier years. While it may seem that only the latest, books are the greatest, with this trade, that's not true.
Just remember, the trade is far slower than working with computers. And do not feel bad about having to "learn how to crawl before you walk, or run."

Aramage,
I've been in the computer industry since 2006, when I graduated with my B.S. Degree. I'm going to the sheet metal trade hopefully in August of this year. I prefer hard work as opposed to office work. I've got 3 generations of Sheet Metal in my family including my older brother. I hope you can give me some advice seeing as how I'm making a very similiar career transition as you did two years ago. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The work can sometimes be hard, but many of the difficulties are offset by the attitude and smarts you bring to each project. It sounds like you're on the right track - I'm sure there will be many here willing to help when you have questions - good luck and keep us up to date as when you begin your new career...the sheet metal industry is always looking for ambitious and willing to work tinners  |

Hey Gang,
Like Aramage, I'm new to sheet metal having spent the last decade or so doing PC tech support. Last year I went back to school to learn CAD. About a 6 weeks ago I was hired by a custom stainless steel shop as a drafter but I can tell I really need to know whats going on in the shop in order to draw intelligently. I know that there is a good opportunity for me here to be running the place in a year or two if I learn enough. Besides getting a handle on bending metal, I need to learn as fast as I can about estimating. Anyway, glad to be here and look forward to learning from all of you. Thanks in advance! |
