A cross brake is simply making a slight bend (a crease) from corners to opposite corners. It would look like an X.

Place in the brake, clamp down the top apron and brake slightly, reposition the steel so that the other corners can be clamped and bent up slightly. The red line is a one of the cross brakes.

Actually he is one of my competitors and yet he is still willing to share his knowledge with me. Dear Dumbo,If you have a stack of duct the same size pull the jaws of the brake down ,then kink your material to the desired break and put a vise grip on the round rod on the side of the brake& clamp it so you get the exact crossbreak every time you pull the handle down.Will get your job done quicker and neater.Watch your fingers and your ears!

I did a cross brake yesterday and maybe it was bordom but as I was bending the peice I wondered if there was actually a defined or prescribed angle for a cross break. I use 8 degrees. Is there a rule somewhere about this. Curious mind needs to know:)

I stick a pc. of duct tape tape on each side of the pivot point at the hinge pin on the brake and mark w/magic marker our break point..
We don't cross-break below 13" SMACNA doesn't require cross-break at all if it's lined and you use the required guage mtl..

I thought a Cross Break was when a metal worker got so deep into a problem he had to drop to his knees and ask for some Devine guidance!!!!!!!!!!!

i too have had to ask for some intervention before..
when your stuck and get in a corner..sometimes its the best solution!!
