While sitting on the dock of the bay last night, I looked out over the shimmering, calm water and I began to ponder. If I had one chance to build one boat, what would it be? I continued to mull over in my mind all of the designs I had seen over the year, taking the qualities I most admired from each of them, trying to draw a picture of the craft in my mind. My son was with me there and he had many questions as most seven year olds do, “What is that way out there in the water?” and “ How deep is the water here?”, his newly found fascination with the bay is inspiring to me. I hope to pass the skills I have learned through the years to him. He is very creative in his own right as well are my girls; they all attend a special school for creative and performing arts.
My son has also added about what he wants in the boat. He wants to be able to sleep onboard on those overnight excursions, sounds exciting to me. So the Coon Bug is borne! The drawing, the first rough sketch I had posted, is rough but I think you get the general idea. The boats hull is similar to that of a tunnel hull. In the center of the boat you will find the sleeping quarters. They will also serve double duty as well, what for; I am not sure at this point. It is large enough to house two bunks and small storage for gear. The bunks will serve as seats while under way. The top of the quarters will open up so one could walk through the quarters to reach the bow seats. A soft-screened cover can be made to leave the top open during sleeping hours for better ventilation. The top would only take minutes to close in the event of foul weather it can be closed and accessed through small hatches on each end of the cabin. The bow seating area will be sized so that two people can sit. The aft section of the boat will house the controls and seats for two more people. I will admit, seating will be cramped but sufficient. The pontoons, for lack of a better term, will have storage compartments accessible from the top and from inside the cabin. The pontoons will be filled with foam in the space around all of the storage compartments. The foam would have to be the non expanding type.
I will post more information later….. What do you all think of the name, "Galvcat"? It sounds like a sheet metal mans boat.Nice to be here. |

| If I were to make a detail drawing of one side on the hull of the porposed sheet metal boat, would anyone be intrested in helping with the layout for metal? I will admit, alittle to much computer and not enough scratch awl if you know what I mean. I need help getting started with the layout work. I want to do the lay out by hand, some intricate parts may be cut by NC plasma, but for the most part, done by hand. I will post a clearer better detail of the boat soon. |

Here is a start. This drawing represents one side of the boat. As you know, there will be two sides and the center section. I will work out the center tomorow and we could first figure out how to tie the sections together. This may be the starting point before we can design the inter workings.
Thanks for your help. I can email you the DXF so you can import the drawing into your CAD program to get information that I may have missed. Let me know. |
