A few years ago, I had a package unit retrofit inwhich the side discharge openings on the new unit were opposite of the old unit. The location of the unit would not permit me to slide the unit back, maybe a few inches. The unit was aproximently 20 or so inches from the duct and the side of the building. I did'nt have many options. In the past I have been able to move the units back or even turn the unit 90 degrees due to accessories that needed to be mounted in the duct work (filters).
In this case I decided to build the new duct housing as a unit. The idea was to run the supply duct thru the return. I began by building a wall plate. The plate was made a couple of inches wider than the duct configuration coming thru the side of the building. The hieght of the plate was figured by determining what the elevation of the units side duct openings would be. About 6" was added above what the elevation was figured to be so when the final assembly was installed, the top would have some pitch built into it to shed water off. This plate also had a 1.5" flange turned at 90 degrees away from the wall. This provided a mounting surface for both sides, top and bottom of the return plenum.
Next, the supply offset was built and installed with flexable connector and sealed. A bottom panel built solid, with flanges bent on it to accept the side panels at their bottom edges and reverse flanges bent outward from the air side were bent. The bottom panel was lined with a 1" ductliner and attached by glue and weld pins. The bottom panel could then be slid under the supply fitting and attached to the wall and the unit and sealed from the inside.
The side panels were built in simillar fasion as the bottom. They were tapered back toward the unit at the top to accomidate the 6" of pitch that was previously figured. They too were lined in the same fashion. Once the wall plate, supply offset, bottom plate and side panels were installed the interior was inspected. The top plate could be install and sealed.
When this job was complete, we had a supply duct that had very little heat gain due to its interior location. A flexable connector that did not need to be wrapped with insulation. A large return plenum that was able to draw air from the existing duct opening and around the supply fitting. The return plenum acted as what it was intended for as well as a rain and vermin sheild. The job turned out great. Works well , looks good.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? I really enjoy dealing with package units, but that has not always been the case. Remember the old over and under package units? Those were always a nightmare for me.
I have had the opportunity to install many packaged units thru the years, in many combinations and configurations. Built all types of curbs, adapter curbs and on-site built adapter curbs. If anyone has any information they would like to share, please do. No detail to small. You can see a few of the more recent curbs I have built in the photo gallery.
Thank You ,, pricer |

| I got one question? Did you make any money on this project. That sounds like a hell of a lot of work for one lonley retro-fit. |

A job like this takes good planning. When the job was measured, all of the information described, it took about a half hour, two hours to build and three hours to install, not top mention the two times I had to go to the site. It was done much more quickly than if I had done the project in a more"traditional fashion". "Fail to plan, plan to fail" has always been my motto and it works well!
The reason for my detailed description was to give alternitive ideas to those who need it. I hope this process helps anyone who may need it. When you can integrate several processes into one you save time, which leads to making more money. To answer your question, Yes I did make money.
Thank you |

| You probably looked at this way out,i have many times on side discharge units whith reversed openings placed new unit sleeepers on the opposite end of the existing plenum. Closing up and sealing the previous duct inlets, thereby allowing for straight thru connections, always checking the undersrtucture supports. |

Would you mind posting some type of drawing of sorts to help me to understand. I think I understand but I just want to be sure. Do you practice the forgotten art of sheet metal layout? |
