For support I ended up using a stainless tube (8-sided) slightly smaller than the cross-body. It was connected to a beam at the top of the turret. The whole cross slides over that and gets riveted to the stainless. This also means there are no nails needed to penetrate the base. The homeowner was impressed with the improvement over the face-nail strategy.

Nice work! where are you located ?
I have never tried making a cross before..
I did a bid about a month or so, for a steel company to clad a 35 ft. tall cross in polished stainless.
I really hope we dont get that one.
