Hi All,
I'm a 51 yr. old apprentice and have been in the trade for a whopping 6 months now... never too old eh?
I've spent all of my adult life in another trade working as a glazier for almost 20 yrs. and as a glazing contractor for the past 15 yrs.
I come from a family of tinners, but thought I'd been cured of it at an early age, working for my dad as a teen, but I guess not.
I spent the past summer finishing up two large commercial glazing jobs, here in my home town...
One was a new health food store which included extensive storefront work and an 8' dia. stained glass panel of the earth.
The other job was a renovation of an old movie theater, taking it back to what it originally looked like during the vaudville days... Got to do some very nice storefront and mirror work on that job.
These two jobs kept me busy throughout most of the summer and as they drew close to completion, I realized that new work had slowed to a crawl.
I called several generals I subed with to see what was on the horizon and found out things looked pretty dim for the winter.
With that, I closed my glass shop and went to work for a local company, owned by two brothers who are friends of mine, not to mention that one of my brothers worked there as well.
My girlfriend was all for the switch also, telling me I'd have more free time, not being self employed anymore...
Having made the switch to sheet metal, it was with great relief that I stumbled upon some old books about tinsmithing on the Google site...
Yes, there is an art side to this trade, just like glass!!!
I also found my way here, while doing a search on the wired edge process.
I'll be asking many questions, 'cause I really need to make up for "lost" time.
Thank You All for having this forum!!!
