OK..First let me introduce myself...My name is Shane Gilstrap and I live in Wichita, Kansas and am a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local #29 and I have been doing sheetmetal for 14 years and have been turned out for 7 years....
I stumbled across this site and am excited to be a member and to share knowledge with other sheetmetal workers!!
Now to the problem...I am trying to remove a blower shaft from a Trane Air handling Unit that is probably at least 20 years old..The shaft is 8' Lg. and 5" dia. the squrriel cage is a single wheel with 2 seprate sets of blades...We cannot for the lifes of ourselves get the key out....My question to anyone that reads this is...Do you have any tips?

Hey welcome to the site UDLOSE - I have to ask, why are you pulling the shaft?
We had a similar instance where it started out as a bearing replacement, we subcontracted the work, the problems began when they couldn't get the new bearing on and they pounded and forced it on.. these big boys need to be exact and true (there is absolutely no room for error) and it wasn't long, minutes until the new bearings heated up and seized up / now the nightmare began getting those bearings off the shaft…too much heat applied, an old shaft that wore to the older bearings, questioned whether it was straight (true) or not, we just don’t know what the problem actually was but the facility ended up buying a new shaft? BIG BUCKS…and down time.
How old is the unit? Are you doing a bearing replacement or pulling the cage? Actually, you'll need new bearing either way? |

| Not exact on how old but am guessing AT LEAST 30 years old (It is in Boeing)...We are pulling the shaft and leaving the cage (Have it supported with a chain fall)...I am not sure WHY they want the shaft replaced but Spirit (Boeing) wants it done..the replacement shaft from Trane is 3800.00....we are looking into having someone else build us a new shaft.. |
