Sheet Metal Automobile - step flange Rivnut - Dec 14, 2005 - 03:58 PM Post subject: step flange
I'm trying to make a stepped flange around the edge of a hole, 3 x 4 inches, in my vw bus. The metal is about 18 gage. I've had pretty good results with a lever type tool from Eastwood that includes a 3/16 punch as well. The problem is the tool will not step flange the corners of the cutout. I've tried the wider flange tool based on the vise grip but it will not produce the step with the force I can apply to the handles and it won't fit in the hole. I can't believe there is no company that doesn't make a tool for the corners. Can someone tell me how to produce this step flange in the corners? I am making an access door. I'll use sealant around the flange, make a door from the same 18 gage metal and rivet it on around the edges. As this isn't a frequent access I'll just drill out the rivets when I need in there. It's to replace the fuel sender on the top of the gas tank. Otherwise, it's pull the engine and fuel tank.

Rivnut....try splitting the corners.Otherwise I think that on an inside corner you're stretching and shrinking the metal..........You'll lose some rigidity, but I think it'll
work.................bordontn
