Post subject: Elbow Pattern
We have a ton of elbow patterns in the shop where I work. On the pattern, there is a few different "v" notches on the bottom edge of the pattern. Someone once said that is for determining the throat radius of an elbow. Anybody know about this? How are they used?

Could be, anyway to show us a picture of these patterns?

Elbow Patterns By Kidder on page 63 shows some notches, is this similar to what you're referring to?

The notches are there because this is a pattern for a drop cheek elbow and this is were you would make your brake for the set down but I could be wrong. Like Bud said I got to see a pic. Don't forget the pop rivet at the begining. No blood letting. Bob

Bud,

Here is the pic of the pattern. Notice, there are two notches on the lefthand side. This is for a 6" elbow, we have patterns all the way up to 60", and all the patterns have at least a couple of these notches.

Thats is the weirdest looking 6" elbow pattern I've ever seen? That looks like a machine cover of some kind and I wasn't to far off. The notches appear to be an indicader for a drop cheek of sorts or true leanth. Bob

Wow, I have no idea what I'm looking at in that pic. Anyone have a pic of the finished product?

There are so many complex things people have done with sheet metal it makes my head spin.

I believe the pic shows the end of the gore, that angled cutout which is roundsd, looks like it's used to hang the pattern from a nail in the wall...
The v-notches he's asking about are where the seam of the gore would be...
Maybe they are rivet guides or perhaps swedging/crimping marks for assemblying each gore?
